Which OS are you using? Perhaps you need explicitly to associate them to "simpress.exe" (in whatever folder that resides) rather than "soffice.exe"? Or perhaps vice versa? On my system .ppt files open with simpress.exe but Microsoft moves in mysterious ways ...
