Step by step: I had been in the process of updating our menu, using the cut
and paste feature to "merge" two seperate documents into one. The
cut/copy/paste was working without any problem. I then went to a website
and copied an article off for my servers to read about how to serve wine;
the paste function worked when i originally "pasted" the part of the article
i needed ( i didn't need all of it) but the text was much longer than the
page; it seemed to have filled a cell in a table, so i had to remove some
of the text and re-paste onto page two; again, the paste feature worked.
After i printed and closed this document, i went back to the menu file to
work on another menu section; the copy/paste feature worked, but an image i
had cut/pasted from another document disappeared, leaving behind the x
indicating. When i tried to copy/paste from the original document (where i
had taken the gif from before) it wouldn't allow me to paste, either by
using the right click/paste, the ctrl function or the toolbar at top. I
then was unable to paste in any OO application (the draw, the writer or the
calc).
I have already re-installed the software - and i seem to have resolved the
issue for now.

At the very least, I would say this is a bizarre problem. I can answer a
bit of it.
I would imagine the reason that the graphic should up as an X the second
time was that it was pasted as a link instead of being embedded in the
file. You can check this by selecting *Edit > Links* and then if it is
there, you can break the link to make the file stay with the document.
I don't know about the pasting thing. Is it still happening even after
you re-installed?
If it happens again, you should file an issue so that a developer can
take a look at it.
