Suppose I type
x+y
into an equation. It will be rendered like this:
x + y
what if I want to keep the expression rendered with no spaces around "+"? e.g.:
x+y

You can change the automatic spacing between elements, but it will apply to all such spacing within any Formula object. (This may or may not be good enough for you.) Go to Format | Spacing... . Under the Spacing category, reduce the value for Spacing. You can even set your new value as the default if you wish.

If you wanted to reduce spacing in this way but then to have a space elsewhere in the same formula, you could insert either a Small Gap or a Gap from the Formats context menu.

I trust this helps.
