This may be of no relevance to you at all, in which case apologies. The
format you specify is virtually useless outside North America. If you

to include any non NA numbers you will require completely different
formats
which, certainly for Europe, vary from country to country and even from
city
to city. In addition, certainly in the UK, landline numbers have a
different
format from mobile (cell) phone numbers.
Which is exactly why he should use it! The number goes in as xxxxxxxxxx -
it is only /displayed /as (xxx) xxx-xxxx. It was (maybe still is?)
called masking in the Microsoft Office suite.

Huh? If he were dealing with e.g. European numbers (as well as US ones) then
that format would be entirely inappropriate. Which is why I brought up the
subject.
