As John pointed out, the fact that WordPad is the default app is either
because MS Word is not installed on your system any more that your file
associations have been set so that neither Word or Writer is the default
app. To change file associations, I have some instructions here:

2) When I try to send it as "document as e-mail" from OOo I get "0x800CCC"
errors in both Gmail and Earthlink and it refuses to be sent.
Using Thunderbird, I have no errors when I send a document as e-mail. I
am not sure how you do that with Gmail though.
Perhaps these are two separate issues, but the inability to convert to a Word
doc and send it is a frustration I didn't have with the earlier version of OO.
And I've checked Earthlink and Gmail SMTP settings with their user forums and
these are correct.
