I've returned to working on an old document (on a new computer) and my

for the life of me figure out how to get rid of them? I've looked at
the list styles, bullets and numbering, and outlining options, and,
yes, the heading styles themselves, and I can't find where they're
coming from. I'm sure you guys know, though. :-)

It sounds like you're seeing the representation of non-printing characters (spaces, tabs, line/paragraph/page breaks, etc.) which can sometimes be useful. To enable or disable display of these characters, from the View menu click "Non-printing Characters". They should only affect on-screen display, and shouldn't print even when shown on-screen.
