Paul,

Thanks for that information. Just to clarify, are you saying that
Dragon was able to be used to dictate directly into OOo's Writer
program? That is, without having to go through some intermediary
process like Microsoft's NotePad or Wordpad and then copy-and-paste
into OOo?

Paul replied directly to me, without replying to the list, it seems. So, for completeness, he said:

Yes, I use Dragon to "dictate" directly on the OO's word processing program.
There are no intermediate steps whatsoever. That part of it is smooth as
can be. (The snags come from the Dragon - I need to get more sophisticated
at using the software but they are minimal at worst. I found some guy on
the internet who's really into Dragon and he suggests just getting a better
microphone and sound card to improve the accuracy of the transcribing
process.) So as you said "that's good" !!!!!

When setting up and installing Dragon I didn't even come across anything
asking me to state what word management program I'm using - I just installed
it and, after doing the initial set-up and training, started dictating by
opening my different patient's files. No problems! I just finished an hour
or so of work on Dragon and all went well.

I have not tried to use Dragon to control menus yet - I'll let you know what
I come up with whenever I give it a try.

Give Dragon a try for yourself - I bought the bare-bones version (I think
the fancier versions just have more trade-specific dictionaries and more
form letters in them) for $99 from a retail office supply store.

I hope this helps you and all other OO users - as you can tell I'm very
pleased!

Let me know if you have other questions, I'll be glad to help out.

Best,

Paul
I just want to say that upgrading to a better version of Dragon doesn't only give you more dictionaries, but adds many features. You can look at the comparison table at http://nuance.com/naturallyspeaking/matrix/.
