I'm using Times New Roman font size 11, which both applications (Word and Open 
Office) have-- I don't understand why the spacing is shifting.

Yes, this happens when Open Office is the only app running... At most, I'll 
have Firefox and perhaps MS Word open simultaneously - but this happens when 
neither of those are running.
