As others mention you can save in a different format:
        File->Save As->File type

OpenOffice and MS Office can both run on the same machine, so some of them may want to try out OOo, it costs nothing use. It may even work better for them. OOo does a better job at reading old WordPerfect and the occasional corrupted MS Office file than does MS Office, so it may be a useful tool to keep around anyway just in case.

Otherwise, MS has claimed that it would support OpenDocument, which is the file format used by OpenOffice.org, if enough people asked for it. Maybe they will. Maybe they won't but some people figure it's worth a try:

MS brings in money from a lot of activities but only makes a profit from Windows and Office. The profit made by Office depends on keeping control of the file format so exchanging files between MS and other products has been difficult since the early days.
