In OE you can right-click on the group, choose "Local file tab" and click "Reset" button. All messages are removed and next time you open the group, only limited number (default is 300) of headers is downloaded. As far as I remember there is no GUI to do the same in Thunderbird. You have to unsubcribe / resubscribe. Why it downloads all header, I don't know. I'm not an expert in Thunderbird. Once I tried Thunderbird but I can't accept how it handles expired messages so I removed Thunderbird from my disk.
