That's a case of the cure being worse than the sickness. By the time you've finished carefully repeatedly selecting just the characters you want changed and repeatedly going through the menus to change the case, you could much more easily and quickly have just deleted the whole section and re-typed it from scratch. OpenOffice needs these case change options to be added: 1. Sentence Case (the first character of a section capitalized, all other characters lower case) 2. Title Case (the first letter of each word capitalized, all other characters lower case) 3. Toggle Case (individually invert case of each individual character in a selected section) I've also noticed a strange capitalization behavior with Writer: Instead of actually capitalizing characters, it sometimes uses some kind of code that makes the characters display as capitals, but the actual characters remain lower case.
