Also, if I interpret the OP correctly, he was looking for a way of
searching WITHIN OOo, when you go to the File > Open dialog.

Well, he did write:
"While this usually works with MS Word's .doc files directly from the
Windows Explorer, or (better) from within Word itself"

For me this means:
1. He is using Windows.
2. Searching with Windows Explorer is good enough.
=> Google Desktop may help him.
