[users] Default font; highlighted words

First of all, thank you for offering a superb product, that functions 
identically to Word as far as I can tell, free!  It is truly appreciated.
  I'm wondering if I can change the default font, when a new document first 
opens. I HATE Times New Roman!
  Also, sometimes when I begin to type a word, the full word is displayed, with 
the untyped part of it highlighted.  How do I get it to appear?  I've tried the 
arrow key, enter, & tab; all of them make it disappear.
