Which version of Thunderbird are you using (haven't read every message in this thread, so apologies if you have already answered this, but it wasn't in your original post)?

Is it only OOo that doesn't recognize TBird as your default mail client?

Have you tried using the 'Set Program Access Defaults' utility?

'Start' > 'Set Program Access and Defaults'

Or, if it doesn't show up on your Start Menu, open the 'Add/Remove Programs' control panel, then click on 'Set Program Access and Defaults' on the left, then click on 'Custom', and see if you can set it there..
