I am a professional writer, and demand the best team-oriented writing and editing tools. I switched to OpenOffice last year, and have not looked back.

Writer is every bit as capable as MSFT Word, and it plays perfectly in an all MSFT shop. The ODT files are a fraction of the size of DOC files. Text, when cut+pasted into a blog post or other online target, doesn't contain all kinds of proprietary garbage that MSFT Word always tacks on.

I also find many things are simply easier to do in OpenOffice. Calc is tighter and faster. Configuring apps is easier. Apps load and run faster. There's little non-functional eye candy. And overall, I find there's minimal bloat.

MSFT Office does have some advantages, but they're outweighed by OpenOffice's advantages. And I have never lost data using OpenOffice. Then again, I have auto-backups turned on, and I hit Ctrl+S every few seconds.

Lastly, show me where I can report MSFT Office bugs, or get free online support 24x7?
