.sxw is the file extension used by OOo 1.x files. OOo 2.x offers backward compatibility with those files without requiring conversion (the actual difference between .sxw and .odt files is rather minor). What many people do is leave their older works in .sxw, and if the file is updated, they can choose to save the updates as .odt or simply retain the old .sxw file type for interchangeability with OOo 1.x.
