I have been using AVG for years on my own computers and put it on customer computers when:

1.  they do not have an anti-virus;
2.  their commercial antivirus is about to expire;
3. when they have Norton and Norton is the probable cause of their problems.

We do sell VET for those who need to purchase their software for accounting, policy, or legal reasons, but otherwise recommend AVG.

The trouble with Norton and some of the others is that they are trying to corner the WHOLE market: anti-virus; spyware; adware; malware; hacker intrusions; data mining; and so on. The result is such a complex piece of software that it ends up stopping you from doing what you want to do on and with your computer. I prefer separate anti-virus, spyware, and firewall software and also use a hardware firewall.

I recommend AVG with regard to anti-virus, and use Spybot and Ad-aware for malware.

Kind regards,  James

Since a computer crash a couple of year ago (not necessarily virus related) I've been using a free version of AVG which seems very satisfactory. It was put on by the "expert" who cleaned my PC and upgraded it from Windows 98 to XP. I had Norton Professional Security 2004 previously which I found often
interfered with the installation of new software. I haven't had the same
problems with AVG.

An update to version 7.5 has just been issued.

Good Luck,

Sittingbourne.

I should like advice on this.

My Norton agreement has expired but before that it became "aggressive" so
I had to turn it off before receiving e-mails!!

Does Open Office offer this service, or can you recommend one?

Norton anti-virus software IS a virus. It runs processes in the background without your permission. It misses a LARGE number of problems that AVG gets everytime. Norton frequently takes control of the computer without giving a
reason.
