I then started a new piece, started it in my normal "First Chapter"
template. Somewhere in the middle of the thing, the space bar
stopped working, until I typed the next non-space character.
I was able to correct it by pasting the text into gedit, the Gnome
Text Editor, and thence back into the first chapter of a
previously-written piece.
Does anyone recognize this? Is there a simpler cure for it than
taking everything into simple text, then pasting it back again?
See this thread about that :

This thread has nothing at all to do with my problem.
I thought it was the same problem : "when a space is typed at the end
of a line, it does not show, although a “blind” space has been inserted"
Anyway, sorry to have tried to help. Won't do that again.
Sorry about being so abrupt. As I believed I had explained, all my
documents were "normal" until last night this one document, only in .odt
not in.rtf, refused to show spaces until something else (a non-space
character) had been typed.
This was quite confusing.
I suspect I had hit some combination of keys that gave me this situation
(feature?)
I finally was able to remedy the situation by taking the text, pasting
it into a text-editor, where the formatting was lost, then Paste-special
back into a formatted document.
What I was hoping to find out was some way to turn this off, should it
happen again, without my having to go to all the trouble of cutting and
pasting again.
The thread has to do with a feature of not showing any spaces at the end
of a line, as I understand it, when one comes to the end of a line and
hits return.
Thanks,
JimW
