As others have already said, OpenOffice will not read Microsoft Works
files. But no: you do not have to buy Works, as there are two solutions.
Conversion problems such as this are always much more easily and
effectively handled at the sending end rather than the receiving
end. If it is possible, go back to the source of these files and
save them instead from Works in a format suitable for importing into
OpenOffice. These .wps files are word processor files, and suitable
formats include Word (.doc), Rich Text Format (.rtf), or even plain
text (.txt).
Another possibility is to find someone else with Works installed who
is prepared to convert these files to one of these formats for you.
But there is also a neat workaround. Download and install the free
viewer for Microsoft Word document files from the Microsoft web
site. Open your Works file in this. (The 2003 version accepts Works
files.) If all you need to do is display or print the files, you
have now achieved what you want. But if you need to edit the
material further, select all the text in the viewer and
copy-and-paste it into OpenOffice Writer. This will preserve most of
the formatting, at least.
By the way, every user of OpenOffice should install the free viewers
from Microsoft for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files, as it is easier
and better to display and print files you receive this way than by
opening them as if for editing in OpenOffice.
I trust this helps.
