[users] program size on PC, had OpenOffice 279 MB + 108 download, in programs and features : 1,10 GB ?

Hi,
We have Vista Basic, can somebody explain the difference between 387 MB and 
1,10 GB indicated above ? Had XP on old PC from which 70% full of downloads - 
updates and patches from Microsoft, no need to say there was no room left to 
work with it and want to prevent this happens to new PC, don't have the money 
to buy each 2 years a new one.
