Sharing files is the job of the operating system, not the office suite, so
what worked before for Excel should now be working for Calc. The only
difference is that Calc will not allow more than one user at a time to
open the file.

This is not strictly true, in fact: what works here in Excel does not work in Calc. The questioner is alluding to Excel's facility to save as what it calls a "shared workbook". This enables multiple users to edit a single file and each open instance of Excel to respond to changes made to the file by others.
