Charles: you are missing the problem itself. Those of us on dialup do
not want to wait up to an hour for an email to download that we may have
no interest in. It ties up the internet, the average mail program, and
slows your computers usability for that period of time.

Jarle: an interim solution may be to install Mailwasher if you have a
windows machine. IIUC this downloads the first 1k of every email (enough
to get the headers and the first paragraph or so). It is designed as an
anti-spam program but comes in useful for the thoughtless people that
send the latest funny that just happens to be a PDF, powerpoint, or
flash file. Usually with the subject "Forward this on" etc. Once
mailwasher has run you can delete offending posts on the server without
downloading.

NOTE:Mailwasher is not open source as far as i can tell, if anyone knows
an opensource alternative, i would be happy to promote that.
