You don't have to give up the package manager as OO is distributed as a bunch
of rpm files that you can just install with "rpm -i *.rpm" after you un-tar the
original distribution file.

And OO itself will tell you when there is an update available.

Don't forget to put "exclude=openoffice*" in /etc/yum.conf to prevent any
possibility of conflict.

Install the latest version of the Sun jre and tell OO where to find it (Tools -
Options - Java) for best results.

You lose nothing at all by using the "official" OO on Fedora Linux.
