Fortunately, OpenOffice.org has versions for Mac... see

Hello Judith,

You don't say whether you installed the Aqua version of OpenOffice.org or
the version that runs under X11. Secondly: did you really install, or just
download? Can you find the OOo map under Applications?

>From what you indicate, I'd say you installed the version with X11. If this
is the case, if OOo is open, you have the OOo icon (two birds on a greengray
background) in your Dock, as well as the X11 icon (black X on white square).
To go to your document, database or whatever in OOo, don't click on the OOo
icon (that only gives Edit script and some greyed-out options), but on the
X11 icon, then Window, where you'll find the docs/windows you opened under
X11.
If OOo is closed, you will of course need to open it by clicking on its
icon... or find it in Applications.

I haven't seen much of Base yet myself, so I can only advise you to read
about Base:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/0110GS-GettingStartedWithBase.pdf
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/0100GS-GettingStarted.pdf
(chapter 10 = Base)
and more... see http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Database
or http://documentation.openoffice.org/

I hope this helps, if not please post back here with some more details,
