As pointed out in other replies it doesn't automatically convert your Word
documents. That requires someone at the keyboard taking action to change
existing documents.

New documents are saved in a format Microsoft Word does not understand. That
is the default. The setting can be changed so that new documents are
automatically saved in Microsoft Word format. If that is done you will be
able to create documents and exchange them with clients who use Word.

If you would like to avoid the expense of a Microsoft Office license, this
"thing" hearafter called OpenOffice or OOo, is free and can continue being
used at no cost.
To change the default so that OOo Writer saves new documents in the
Microsoft Word format do the following....
- open Writer
- select Tool>Options... from the menu
- open the Load/ Save branch
- select the General item on this branch
- look for the "Default file format" settings near the bottom middle
- - set the Document type to Text document
- - set the Always save as option to Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP
- click the OK button
