However, by default OOo (OpenOffice.org) saves documents in ODF (OpenDocument ISO/IEC 26300:2006 standard) file format. Microsoft software does not include filters to open files in this format, although there are add-ons available which make this possible. OOo can open, edit and save files in the Word 2002 ".doc" format and can be configured to use this format as the default option. There are other options, but this might be the easiest one for you to use. There is more information about this in the documentation at the OOo website (see my signature below).
