There are two things you can do. If you want them to be able to change the document, save it in Word format or if not, export it as a PDF. As long as they save in Word format, you should be able to read their files. Also, when you save in Word format, make sure you select that from the drop down list and don't just change the file extention. Also make sure automatic file extension is selected.
