James: OpenOffice is a full office suite, similar to Microsoft Office. It is
possible to have both OpenOffice and Microsoft Office on the same
computer, without problems, as I do at work. I have also installed
OpenOffice on a computer that already had Word Perfect and again no
issues. I have not had any experience with Quatro Pro.

Ron: James, what is the reason a person has Open Office on their computer,
if they
haveM.S. Word, Excell and the full ofice suite, or the full wordPerfect
offive
suite? What purpose does Open Office serve a person? I was under the
impression
that a person would use O.O. mostly if they did not want to put up the money
to buy
the expensive WordPerfect or Microsoft Office Suite.

James: Are you saying the file menus in Quatro Pro look like OpenOffice?

Ron: Yes, when I open Quatro-pro (wordPerfect calc/spread sheet program)
the menu looks like Open Office, even though I have uninstalled Open Office
program from my computer. Instead of having a list of menu items, without
lines,
QP has each menu item encased in a line, like a outlined cell line, as Open
Office
does on their menu. So, in other words, Open Office has taken over the look
of
   my QP menu look.

James: That option in OpenOffice refers to making OpenOffice the default for
Microsoft Office documents, such as Word's .DOC files. Are you saving
Word Perfect files in Word format? If so, that might explain some of
this. The same applies to Quatro Pro and Excel files.

Ron: This is a possibility also. I am not sure. I have only Word Perfect
on my computer.
It ask's if I want to see my document as WordPerfect or M.S. Word. I usually
choose WP.
My WordPerfect word processor/writer, does not seem to be affected anymore by
O.O.,
  just my Quatro-pro.

James: as I mentioned above, you can have both on the same system. However,
if
you install Microsoft Office, you will have to reset your file
associations, if you want OpenOffice to be the default application for
Microsoft Office files. This is easy to do.

Ron: I want M.S. Word to be my set-up file associations for all created Word
files and
WordPerfect to be the file association for all created WP files. is this an
automatic thing
that happens, when Open Office is also on the computer?

I recall, when I downloaded Open Ofice, it asked if I wanted O.O. to be the
default or
something like that. I agreed to it, since I wanted to use a spread sheet
that acted like MS Excell,
and I did not have Excell on my computer. it was for this reason I first
downloaded Open Office.
aparantly, O.O. became my default extension for all spread sheet
applications, and thus the
frustration I am having on how my WP Quatro-pro is looking now like Open
Office.

James: While I don't know what caused your problems, sometimes Windows goes
"nuts" and causes all sorts of problems. A couple of years ago, I was
at IBM providing Windows and application support for a very large
customer. All too often the only fix was to reinstall. In fact, it was
necessary so frequently, that the customer had an easy to use process
for a a user to get their system re-imaged. I have never seen that sort
of behaviour in Linux or OS/2 ( I used OS/2 for many years and also
provided 3rd level OS/2 support at IBM).
