My friend sent me a MSword document which fits on one page and consists of a table with data. When I look at it in OO it doesn't fit on one page. The row heights are a little bigger but the characters seems to have the same size.
What can be the problem?

There is no problem: just a difference!

In fact, this behaviour occurs not just between different word processors but also between the same word processor on different systems. It is a common fallacy that any document created in, say, Microsoft Word, will display identically in a copy of Word on another system. This is not so: differences occur because of different fonts, printers, paper sizes, and so on. So you should expect these differences, and the real question is how to avoid them. One way is to choose a format for transferring such documents which is more robust. One such is PDF: interestingly, OpenOffice can create these, but not most (older) versions of Microsoft Word.

But you can also tinker with your current document in various ways to make it fit:

o Has the author spaced material by inserting empty paragraphs (consecutive Enters)? If so, you may wish to edit out some of these.

o Go to Format | Page... | Page and change the margin settings so as to allow a slightly larger print area on your page.

o Go to right-click | Edit Paragraph Style... | Indents & Spacing. At the bottom, under "Line spacing", you can choose from a range of different options. If you select Fixed or Proportional, you can then finely adjust the line spacing using the window to the right. Alternatively, setting it back to "Single" may be all that you need.

o To change the spacing in one paragraph only, put the cursor into that paragraph and go to Format | Paragraph... | Indents & Spacing. Then continue as above.

o You could change the font size itself. Go to right-click | Edit Paragraph Style... | Font and make the change there.

I trust this helps.
