I have got a new laptop with Ubuntu and OpenOffice 2.3 preloaded.
My friend sent me a MSword document which fits on one page and

When I look at it in OO it doesn't fit on one page. The row heights
are a little bigger but the characters seems to have the same size.
What can be the problem?
OR, View -> Zoom.

Ho, ho! You are joking, of course? The zoom control merely changes
the size at which the text and page are displayed, of course, and has
no effect at all on the pagination or the printed result.
Apart from the ways I suggested before, it is possible to scale the
text width, but you do this elsewhere: at right-click | Edit
Paragraph Style... | Position | Rotation/Scaling | Scale width.
