Hello Pete,

don't know how many years of use of openoffice and I noticed for the
first time this menu entry today :-)

here's what the online guide has to say about the select text entry

"You can enable a selection cursor in a read-only text document or in
the Help. Choose Edit - Select Text or open the context menu of a
read-only document and choose Select Text. The selection cursor does
not blink."

(if you ask me, a big waste of a shortcut).

To select text "normally" without using the mouse press the shift key
in combination with the arrow keys (with CTRL to select a word at a
time), end (go to end of line, ctrl+end goes to the end of the
document), home (start of line, start of document with ctrl), etc...
Ctrl+A selects the whole document.
If you don't want to keep pressing the shift key, use the F8 key once:
now (and until you press again F8) you are in selection mode (you will
see EXT in the status bar). use the above mentioned keys to select the
desired text.

Cheers,

Michele
