If I save this document as a .odt file it saves fine.

If I am not mistaken, this is known issue with OO. I suggest voting for
it - http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=3692
That issue is about the request, though not clearly stated, to make a
cell property for text rotation.
I would expect an issue for Wordprocessor with keyword WW8 or
ms_interoperability and rotate(d/ion) in the summary. Dunnot find it.
So I'll make one later on.
