MSOffice and OpenOffice work happily on the same machine. All *you* have to
do is decide which program opens which files when you double click a file.
On Windows this is done using a mechanism called "File Association". Each
"extension" - also known as the file's "type", (.doc, .xls, odt, .htm etc.)
is "associated" with a particular program and it's that program (the
"default") that Windows invokes when you double click a file. When you
install OpenOffice it will ask if you want it to be the default program for
.doc, .xls and .ppt files. Your choice. If you say "no", then Word, Excel
and Powerpoint will be used, respectively, for those types. If you say
"yes", then Writer, Calc and Impress will be used. If you wish you can say
"yes" for some of the three and "no" for the other(s).

If you want to open a file with a program other than the default for that
type of file (extension), just *right* click the file, choose "Open with
..." and either choose the program from the list offered or, if the program
you want isn't on that list, just browse to it in whichever folder it's
installed.

You can very easily change the file association for any type of file. Right
click the file, choose Properties and press the button labelled "Change"
next to the name and icon of the current default program. Browse to the
program you want and click OK *after* ticking (check marking) the "Always
use this program ..." box.
