The lack of responses is likely because no one else has a similar setup
to yours and thus no good experience to relate. I don't either <g> but
do have some experience with LANs so I'll take a shot at it.

To be honest, this sounds "normal", depending on how long that "freeze"
is, and partly *where* you are executing OOo from (server or your local
machine; you don't give much info). But either way:
Your machine has to switch gears, possibly rearranging memory too,
from what it was doing, ask the LAN for permission to talk to it, then
for permission to use whatever directory you want to store it in, get
acks, etc. etc., and when all that is accomplished it goes back and
locates the data in memory that needs to be saved, and sends it to the
server. And then the server connection drops, meaning the next time
that happens, the whole process has to be gone through all over again
because all the temporary files are being stored locally. I'm guessing
of course, but that's what it sounds like in very simple terms.

IMO this implies that the Manual Save is being saved to your local drive
on your workstation and not on the server. Where is it *supposed* to be
saved? Local or on the server? I'll bet manual saves are going to
your local hard drive and the auto saves are going to a network drive.
Watch out for what version of the file you reopen in this case; one
might be more recent than the other.

IIRC OOo will let you set the directories to use for auto saves and file
saves, temporary files, things like that. Have a look at those and see
if that's not what's going on. Without more information it's hard to be
much more explicit, but in general it should be manageable from the
Options menu choices. I see you as having two choices:
1. Contact IT if they set OOo up, and see what they can do.
2. Fully describe what you want to happen vs what is actually happening
with what and when, under what situations, etc., and be sure to include
your Operating System and version of OOo, and post back here after
reading the link provided below.
I'll bet that will get you a lot more responses.

There's no problem/shame with not getting things right the first time;
in fact, it's rather expected. But there is when the same action
continues in spite of those who try to assist. The only "stupid"
question is the one that doesn't get asked. OK, before anymore cliche's
occur to me<g>:
