Hi there
I am a new member and am delighted with the openoffice system. Is
there any ability to be able to access power point or any other
applications other than 'word' document'?
Yes, OpenOffice can open most Powerpoint presentations and Excel
spreadsheets. It's not 100% compatible but handles most things. Sound in
Powerpoint is one of the things it's not too hot on. The thing it
absolutely can't do yet is open documents in Microsoft's new so-called
"2007" format. That should happen in September with version 3 of OpenOffice.
When you install OpenOffice on Windows you are asked if you want it to
be the "default" program for handling 3 different types of Microsoft
documents: Word, Powerpoint and Excel. You cans say yes or no to each
independently. If you said "yes" for, say, Word documents, then when you
double click a Word document it will open in OpenOffice's Writer even if
you have Word installed. Ditto Powerpoint and Excel. If you said "no"
then you can still open the document in OpenOffice by *right* clicking
on it, choosing "Open with ..." and selecting OpenOffice as the program
to use. If you select "soffice.exe" it's clever enough to decide which
actual program - Writer, Impress or Calc - to use.
You can also use OpenOffice to create documents in all three Microsoft
formats. Just use Save As, pick the appropriate format from the list and
make sure the little box labelled "Automatic file name extension" is
ticked (checked). No point doing this, of course, unless you need to
give the document to someone not as enlightened as you and who only has
[expensive] Microsoft products installed.
