56kb = 56000 bits per second. As serial data it is not 1024 bits per k

This is not right since my US Robotics Courier I-Modem is a 56k
ISDN-Modem and has definitivly 57600 BpS. The same is vor my
USR 56k Voice Modem. It HAS 57600 BpS.
You're confusing two items. Serial ports can run at 57,600 bits/sec., which is a standard serial port speed. The maximum carried by the digital phone network (including ISDN is 56,000 or 64,000 bits/s, depending on whether clear channel is used. Those high speed analog modems, that rely on a digital phone network to deliver speeds above 33K (and only in one direction) max out at, in theory, 56,000 but often deliver less, depending on call quality.
