They don't provide a logical, visible link, such as a footnote does,
from the main text to the side text. I'm still trying to figure out how
Andrew did that in his file, so I can insert my own.

Also, somebody mentioned the frames aren't good across pages and for
large documents. I'm looking at a very large document. I've also shied
away from tables for main text, but I may have to make an exception
here. If I can't get that logical link, seems tables would do as well as
frames, would they not? Except that frames avoid having the main text
inside a table.

Off hand, OOo is a poor choice, because I do not believe that you can place arbitrary frames and have text flow from frame to frame. Also, if you intend to insert text and have it grow, my method does not allow arbitrary placement of footnotes and such. It relies on hard coding all formatting, which is a horrid solution that only works in small special cases.
