FYI - For compatibility reasons, I tend to use a dedicated PDF print driver for Microsoft Word documents, such as CutePDF or PrimoPDF on the Windows side.
>From the Mac and Linux side, there is a small application which enables CUPS pdf generations. These methods seem to work well with PDFBOX 1.8.4 in my tests. -Tres
