Hello, good people,
I am very new to SpamAssasin.
Please can you tell me if Spamassasin can be used to filter web based mails like yahoomail, hotmail, mail , etc.?
I want to be able to filter only the web based mails that is sent out of my network to the Internet, especially against spams and scams.
Please if you know, kindly help me out. I am under pressure here in my office to provide solution to the problems of spams thats is sent through the web based mails from my office to the Internet.
If by this you mean filter mail messages sent and received by users logged into the web interfaces of yahoo, etc. then the answer is a resounding no. SA cannot, and I highly doubt anything can.
SpamAssassin can scan EMAIL. Webpages that are used as interfaces to control the creation and reading of email are distinctly not email messages, they are webpages, nothing more. Since Yahoo, hotmail, etc change their web interface constantly, it would be extraordinarily difficult to write any form of tool that could decode them, and even harder to patch that into some sort of transparent http proxy so you could "block" the offensive webpages.
If however, you want to set up your mailserver to only use SA to scan mail sent to yahoo or from a yahoo address, etc, that's possible. You can pretty easily set up rules in most MTA layer integrations that control what email gets fed to SA. One such tool is MailScanner. You could easily configure MailScanner to use SpamAssassin on mail From or To yahoo, hotmail, etc, and not feed SA any other emails. Most MailScanner options can be controlled by rules, so you'd make the "Use SpamAssassin" option a rule-list where some addresses get scanning, and others bypass it.
