Really, that's not what they did. They do forbid queries through public resolvers like 8.8.8.8 and return a special value that means don't do that. I suppose some clients might misinterpret it. They still provide free service but you have to set up an account and get an access key to use in the queries, which is not hard. (I've done it.) You get enough queries for a small mail system. If you query more than that they'll rate limit you and someone will contact you suggesting you upgrade to a paid account.
