I can recreate the issue as well.
5.14 works, 5.8 doesn't. Appears to be a regex that has requirements
beyond our 5.8.8 preferred version.
John, do you think you can identify a regex that's downward
compatible and open a bug about this issue?
I'll try to figure out a compatible RE.
I'm opening a bug, but it'll be about not being able to check the perl
version in preprocessor directives...
