Even better, use a split-configuration where CATALINA_HOME contains your Tomcat installation and CATALINA_BASE contains your configuration and web applications. It makes upgrading between point-releases *trivial *. Moving between major releases will absolutely require that you re-write your conf/server.xml, but mostly everything else can stay the same.
