I've tried to use a filter without success because as explained http://www.mail-archive.com/users@tomcat.apache.org/msg75996.html here : Valves are called before filters, and Tomcat's authentication and authorization are implemented as Valves. I don't believe you can have your filter run before the auth Valve.
