When I was in Leningrad (as it then still was) in 1990, the hard-currency
bars had $2 bills in abundance. Of course, this was in the land of the
3-kopek coin and the 3-ruble bill. The U.S. and Canada are probably almost
alone with respect to not having a currency based entirely on the series 1,
2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, etc -- the fly in the ointment being the quarter.
I have heard that superstitious people associate $2 bills with hard times,
and thus get rid of them as fast as they can. Possibly, previous issues of
$2 bills have coincided with recessions.
