I don't think we can ever know the answer to your first question. In order
to do so, we would have to be able to read inside their minds. I'm sure
rough estimates can be given.

The only problems American society sees is what is presented to them in the
media. If the media would report that not being a metric country is costing
us jobs and good pay and increasing our poverty, then maybe they would
listen. Unless a strong connection between job loss, poor exports, etc, can
be directly linked to the metric issue, then no problem can or will be seen.

For the most part, Americans are measurement illiterate. It is easy to say
most Americans support FFU, but more realistic to say they are just familiar
with the unit names. Say inch with any number in front of it gets a
positive response. The number doesn't have to be correct, all that has to
be said is the word inch.

When someone says they don't know what a millimetre is , they are really
saying they are not familiar with the word, or the word sounds strange to
them.

Sometimes when I give info in millimetres, the person listing will then ask
if that is equal to nnn inches? I always just answer yes, even if I know it
is way off. I want them to be confused with inches and get the wrong feel
for the values. I want others to make mistakes and have it cost something.
To me this a punishment for not moving forward.

But, I guess to most of these people, they don't see the damage being done.
Ignorance is truly bliss.

John
