Yes, it was oral.

However, when I was a very small child (late 1930s), my parents took my
temperature in the armpit.

Was that an oral temperature?  Anal readings are suppose to be 0.5�C higher.
I've even heard of readings being taken under the arm pits, but I have no
idea what temperature one would consider normal for that.  Does anybody
know?
