And the first time I went to a doctor in Japan (1983), he gave me a
thermometer and I started to put it in my mouth.  He stopped me, "What
are you doing!"  He then took it and put it under my arm.

These days many electronic thermometers use the temperature in the ear
and have a switch to convert to either oral or anal temperature.
