I believe that you are talking about the sidereal day.

The earth is in orbit around the sun as well as spinning on axis. The
earth dweller conventional day is related to sun position (e.g. noon to
noon). It is not the same as a complete earth axis rotation relative to
space.

If the earth did not spin but still was in orbit around the sun, an
earth dweller would get one day each year. A simple approximation of the
difference can be found by dividing 24 hours by 365.
