I've been thinking about this for a few months now. December 23, 2005 is the 30 year anniversary of the passage of the US Metric Conversion Act of 1975.
Think about that. THIRTY years. That's a long time. Has anyone on the list given thought to the following: A) What kinds of regards we can give that event either from a celebratory point of view, or as a shameful failure point of view? B) Should we, the members of the USMA and others, start working towards recruiting support for another, more inclusive bill before Congress regarding US metrication? If not a full on bill, at least an organized concerted effort to increase metrication awareness culminating in some actual progress forward by December 23, 2005? I've been giving this lots of thought lately and have a whole host of ideas. Regional awareness and education reps volunteering time to schools, businesses, etc. Getting more organized from a letter writing point of view. Working with major organizations that so- far have been detrimental to metrication efforts such as the Food Packaging lobby and ESPECIALLY the Associated Press who seem hell- bent on converting every little bit of metric the public receives to inch-pound. I'm very interested in people's thoughts, both on and off-list. I'm very much starting to feel inspired to work toward something positive with a goal of that date. Thanks in advance.
