I also found two other documents. One relating to history and mentions the
high status of handbook 44 and handbook 130

It does not mention which of these two would take precedence. However, I get
the impression that handbooks 44 and 130 might supercede MP233. Perhaps they
are the current primary documents?

Appendix C says that the US gallon is 231 cubic inches exactly.

It is a shame that MP233 is not online, but it looks like handbooks 44 and
130 might be what I am looking for. Does that sound right?
